Medical credentialing is the process of verifying health care practitioner information. We credential practitioners prior to the hospital granting them privileges in the care of patients at Vanderbilt. We re-credential practitioners every two years, based on Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards. Both JCAHO and National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) have established guidelines for verifying a practitioner's training, competence and compliance with current licensure requirements. In addition, Vanderbilt has additional requirements that are set forth in the Bylaws and in other departmental requirements for all individuals providing patient care at this institution. The credentialing department verifies that all practitioners meet both the national standards and the standards of Vanderbilt. Our department works closely with the practitioner to obtain the required documents and preparing the file for the Credentials Committee.
